NOTE TO TEACHERS! If you are looking for a physical workbook to hand out to your students rather than spending time before each class in front of the copy machine, be sure to check out "My Spanish Workbook" which is the Student Guide designed to go hand-in-hand with this Teacher's Guide!
How to Use this Guide...
This guide is EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED for teaching an entire year of Spanish to Kindergarten ~ 2nd grade! It is intended for use with beginning Spanish students who are learning Spanish as a second language. (It is not recommended for Spanish immersion classes.)
This guide starts with a clickable TOC and contains over 200 pages covering 10 complete units that include the following for EVERY unit:
Unit Overview with Scope & Sequence
Visual Aids
Age-Appropriate Worksheets for Writing Practice
Coloring Pages & Tracing Activities
Short Stories
Clickable YouTube Hyperlinks for Lesson-Related Videos
Recommended Bilingual Read Alouds
Each unit is broken into individual lessons that include a corresponding visual aid and a recommended scope and sequence. YouTube videos are also included with clickable links. Several worksheets are provided with each lesson that include tracing and coloring activities. As you move through a unit, you can check the box when you’ve completed part of the lesson so that you don’t lose track of your progress.
I recommend following a predictable lesson structure like this:
Open with a video (or a simple song like “Buenos Días”) and sing along with your students.
Use a visual aid to drive circle time discussion.
Read a short story if included with the lesson.
Watch a lesson-related video using the links included with the lesson overview.
Finally, have students return to their desks to complete a worksheet to wrap up a lesson and to reinforce learning. Most worksheets take 10 minutes to complete, and coloring pages may take longer. Make sure to explain how to complete the worksheet before handing it out!
I recommend printing out all worksheets before starting a lesson and keeping them in a three-ring binder so that you can pull out what you need easily and make copies for your students. I would also highly recommend printing out the visual aids in color and laminating them ahead of time. You can also use the visual aids digitally, but I find them to be more useful to have in hand during lessons.
Review all YouTube videos ahead of time to see what will work best for you and your students.
You will probably not use all the recommended worksheets for every lesson. You may pick and choose what will work best for your students considering their academic ability. For Kindergarten students, choose VERY BASIC worksheets at the beginning of the school year since most kids will still be learning to write their letters.
Lessons are progressive so I recommend following the order that I have laid out in this guide, although in many cases it will be okay to pick and choose. However, I recommend starting with units 1-3 before moving on. Happy teaching!
Learning Spanish has never been more fun!
